Underground Laboratory Simulates Extreme Cosmic Environments
The astrophysics experimental platform at Shanghai Jiao Tong University Laboratory simulates extreme cosmic environments, with femtosecond lasers and high-energy electron beams operating in synergy to explore new breakthroughs in fundamental deep-space research.
The Laboratory Astrophysics Experimental Platform of the TsungDao Lee Institute at Shanghai Jiao Tong University is located on the second basement level and is China’s first integrated experimental facility dedicated to laboratory astrophysics research. Through the coordinated operation of devices such as femtosecond lasers, nanosecond lasers, and highenergy electron beams, the platform attempts to simulate the extreme physical environments of the universe within the laboratory.
The report介绍s that the central laser hall is responsible for precisely distributing the laser to the eastern and western experimental areas. The eastern experimental area is mainly used to simulate processes such as cosmic ray acceleration, while the western experimental area relies on a nanosecond laser and a highenergy electron accelerator to carry out more complex integrated experiments, with the core device being the integrated target chamber.
At present, the femtosecond laser has completed installation and commissioning, while the nanosecond laser and electron accelerator are under construction, with joint commissioning expected in August. Once the three devices and the two major experimental areas are fully operational next year, the platform will support more complete integrated scientific experiments and serve basic research in deep space and cuttingedge technological exploration.
