The Kuomintang nominates Chiang Wan-an and five others to seek re-election as county and city mayors
The Kuomintang has completed its 2026 nominations for county and city mayors seeking re-election, with six people including Chiang Wan-an and Zhang Shanzheng now in place. Cheng Li-wen says the party will unite the opposition to prepare for the election, and subsequent coordination and nomination developments are worth watching.
The Kuomintang (KMT) held a meeting of its Central Standing Committee in Taipei on the 22nd and approved the nomination procedures for reelection of six incumbent county and city mayors affiliated with the KMT, including Taipei Mayor Chiang Wanan and Taoyuan Mayor Simon Chang.
According to Taiwanese media reports, those nominated to seek reelection also include Keelung Mayor Hsieh Kuoliang, Nantou County Magistrate Hsu Shuhua, Miaoli County Magistrate Chung Tungchin, and Mazu County Magistrate Wang Chungming. The KMT said that after the related nominations are completed, the party’s layout for the 2026 county and city mayoral elections will be basically in place.
KMT Chairwoman Cheng Liwen said the party will hold its national congress on the 25th and stressed that it will make every effort to prepare for the 2026 election, hoping for unity within the party and a common goal of winning the election. She also noted that the KMT will continue to cooperate with the Taiwan People's Party and the opposition camp, and will support other opposition candidates in some counties and cities.
