Voice phishing arrests: 67 people detained, including the ringleader of a criminal organization impersonating the prosecution and the Financial Supervisory Service Check out the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency’s investigation results that dismantled the overseas call center crime network

The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 17th that it had apprehended 67 people, including the ringleader of a voice phishing organization that impersonated prosecutors. Among them, 17 were arrested and detained. According to the police, from 2015 to 2021, the organization operated call centers overseas, including in China, and deceived victims by impersonating prosecutors and employees of the Financial Supervisory Service, and is suspected of stealing about 5 billion won. Investigations found that they pressured victims by claiming they needed to confirm whether they were involved with socalled mule bank accounts or by offering lowinterest refinancing loans. The ringleader, Mr. A, who was arrested this time, is known to be connected to a case in 2020 in which a job seeker was deceived by someone impersonating a prosecutor and had money taken, leading to a fatal choice. After a prolonged investigation, police apprehended Mr. A in Seoul and requested an Interpol Red Notice and forced repatriation for his accomplices who are fleeing overseas.
