Incumbent police officer arrested in connection with allegations of suppressing the investigation into Yang Jung-won

An incumbent police officer suspected of covering up an alleged fraud case involving influencer Yang Jeongwon has been arrested.
On the 5th, the Seoul Southern District Court issued an arrest warrant for Superintendent Song, who is under suspicion of bribery and other charges. Song was known to have been involved in handling the case related to Yang while serving as team leader of Investigation Division 1 at the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul.
Earlier, franchise owners of a Pilates academy where Yang had worked as an advertising model filed complaints in July 2024 against Yang and headquarters officials on charges of fraud and violation of the Franchise Business Act. Afterwards, Investigation Division 1 at the Gangnam Police Station investigated Yang once and then decided in December of that year not to send the case to prosecutors.
During an investigation into a separate stock price manipulation case, prosecutors uncovered evidence that Yang’s husband, Lee, had provided Song with money and entertainment and received information related to the investigation. An arrest warrant was once rejected in April, but as additional evidence was confirmed, a new warrant was requested on the 31st of this month and has now been issued.
After the suspicions were raised, Song’s assignment was changed and he was suspended from duty, and he is currently reported to have been transferred to another police station. Prosecutors are also investigating the possible involvement of other officers at the Gangnam Police Station.
