The sea forest creation project, in which the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, local governments, public institutions, and private companies participate, will be carried out in Seogwipo City, Jeju; Tongyeong City, South Gyeongsang Province; and Taean County, South Chungcheong Province. The purpose of this project is to restore marine ecosystems by transplanting seaweeds such as Ecklonia cava, gurmpi, sargassum, and kelp to coastal areas where seaweed has decreased due to marine desertification, and by creating an environment where spores can spread. A total of 2.6 billion won will be invested from this year through 2029, and a 3.15㎢ sea forest is planned to be created in Hwasunri, Seogwipo City, and in the waters off Dodong, Yokjimyeon, Tongyeong City. A separate publicprivate partnership project will also be carried out in the waters off Gungsido, Geunheungmyeon, Taean County. Taean County, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency have agreed to create a 1.55㎢ sea forest by spending 1.3 billion won through 2029.
