Jeonnam Gwangju pushes ahead with priority construction of the second semiconductor fab
Jeonnam Gwangju Semiconductor National Industrial Complex, pushing ahead with preemptive construction of the second fab Aiming for first mass production in 2030... accelerating efforts to secure land, water supply, and power infrastructure
Jeonnam Gwangju City is pursuing a plan to build two semiconductor fabs first at the Honam region's national semiconductor industrial complex. The city said on the 23rd that it will gradually put related infrastructure in place with the goal of starting mass production in June 2030.
The government has designated the area around the Gwangju Military Airport site as a candidate site for the national semiconductor industrial complex, and Jeonnam Gwangju City believes that land, water, and power supply are all possible there. In particular, it plans to develop 630,000 pyeong of ammunition depot land that can be used immediately and provide it as a site for building the two fabs.
The city plans to carry out the industrial complex designation procedures and site preparation in parallel through next year so that companies can begin construction in 2028. For water, it plans to use the local water supply, connections to the existing water system, and surplus capacity at water purification plants, while for power it plans to secure supply through underground transmission lines, with completion targeted for December 2028.
