On the afternoon of July 17, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with United Nations SecretaryGeneral Guterres at the Shanghai West Suburban Hotel, who was in China to attend the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference and HighLevel Meeting on Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence. Xi Jinping said that since taking office as UN SecretaryGeneral, Guterres has played an important role in upholding multilateralism, addressing climate change, advancing global governance in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, and promoting UN reform. The Chinese side highly values the role of the United Nations in international affairs and stressed that China will continue to support the UN, deepen cooperation with it, and work for world peace and development. Xi Jinping also pointed out that the current international situation is complex and everchanging. Countries should uphold fairness and justice, stay true to the right path while pursuing innovation, and act with responsibility and commitment to safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core and jointly address global challenges. Guterres said that the UN is willing to continue strengthening cooperation with China, oppose unilateralism and protectionism, uphold the UN Charter and international law, and promote the common interests of the international community.
