80th Anniversary of the Opening of the Tokyo Trial: Launch of the 40-volume Chinese "Complete Translation"

On the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Tokyo Trial, the 40volume Chinese full translation of the "Complete Transcript of the Proceedings of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East," compiled and translated over a 10year period, was recently launched in its entirety in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. The translation contains more than 20 million Chinese characters and aims to provide Chinese readers and researchers with firsthand Chinese materials on this period of history.
The report said that this project was completed through collaboration between the Tokyo Trial Research Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages, and other teams, with more than 100 participants. The translation team established a terminology database, organized ChineseEnglish parallel corpora, referred to multilingual historical materials, and had experts in history and law jointly review the text, striving to ensure the translation's accuracy in legal, historical, and linguistic terms.
The team said that the translation should not only be faithful to the original English text, but also restore historical facts as much as possible; when errors in dates, names, or wording appeared in the original records, they would be explained in the form of translator's notes. Researchers believe that this full translation will help lower the reading threshold and also provide more complete Chinese source materials for research on the Tokyo Trial and postwar international law.
