Archaeological Insights into the Wall-Building Techniques of the Shimao City Walls

Research on the Shimao city walls reveals the wisdom behind stone construction, with structures and masonry methods adjusted to local conditions. By examining the terrain and geology, we can uncover the ancient city’s defenses and construction details, unlocking the superb building techniques of our ancestors.

The Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology recently conducted field research at the Shimao city site, further sorting out the various structural types and masonry methods of this ancient city wall. The research shows that in different areas, the Shimao city wall flexibly adjusted its construction methods according to terrain and geological conditions, reflecting the ancestors’ sitespecific approach to construction. The Shimao site is one of the largest known stonebuilt city sites from around the 2nd millennium BCE in China. The city wall was mainly built with local quartz sandstone, together with rammed earth, grass, wood, and other materials. During construction, techniques such as staggered joint overlap, rough masonry for the wall core, tapering treatment, and timber anchoring were also used, reflecting the relatively advanced level of stone construction at the time. Researchers pointed out that the ancestors of Shimao were not only able to optimize wall structures by combining the loadbearing characteristics of different stones, but also able to adapt to complex environments by excavating foundation trenches and building directly on level ground, improving defensive capabilities while balancing efficiency and cost. Followup research will also combine structural engineering to continue exploring issues such as construction organization and technical division of labor.
