SH Abolishes Extra Points for Vulnerable Groups in Redevelopment Rental Housing Applications

It has been confirmed that the Seoul Housing & Communities Corporation (SH Corporation) has eliminated the bonus points for housingvulnerable groups from its recruitment of residents for redevelopment rental housing. SH Corporation explained that this measure was intended to expand housing opportunities for young people and singleperson households. According to reporting by Kyunghyang Shinmun, SH Corporation deleted six bonuspoint categories related to socially vulnerable groups when it announced the 2026 recruitment notice for redevelopment rental housing on the 30th of last month. In this year's application form, only the number of payments into the subscription savings account and the length of residence in Seoul remained, while the bonus points previously given to recipients of basic livelihood or medical benefits, singleparent families, national merit recipients, North Korean defectors, and others were removed. This has also drawn criticism that it does not align with the original purpose of public rental housing. Experts and civic groups pointed out that rather than reducing the share allocated to existing vulnerable groups, supply should be expanded to reflect the demand of various social groups together. SH Corporation stated that, in terms of the eligibility criteria for residents, opportunities for lowincome households to move in are still being protected.
