Strengthening the Intensity and Measures of Basic Research
Increased support for basic research, laying a solid foundation for building a strong nation in science and technology Focusing on original innovation and collaborative breakthroughs to help achieve high-level self-reliance and self-strengthening
On April 30, a symposium on strengthening basic research was held in Shanghai. General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized at the meeting that basic research is the source of the scientific system, and that support should be further increased to enhance original innovation capability and lay a solid foundation for building China into a science and technology powerhouse.
After the meeting, several representatives interviewed said they would implement the meeting spirit in scientific research and talent cultivation, continue to make breakthroughs in areas such as quantum technology, deepspace exploration, artificial intelligence, the oceans, health, and information, and promote closer integration of basic research, applied development, and the transformation of achievements.
The representatives believe that basic research requires large investment, a long cycle, and carries high risk, and therefore needs longterm, stable support. Going forward, research institutions, universities, and enterprises will continue to deepen collaboration, strengthen interdisciplinary integration and organized research, enhance their ability to serve major national needs, and help achieve highlevel selfreliance and strength in science and technology.
