Supercomputer “Lingsheng” Breaks Ground: It Will Be Used for Earthquake, Weather, and Drug Development Simulations

The supercomputer “Lingsheng” has recently been put into operation and ranks among the top in international supercomputing rankings. Reports say that this system can perform extremely largescale computations per second, mainly serving research scenarios such as earthquake simulation, weather forecasting, and new drug development. In disaster prevention, the team at Southern University of Science and Technology is using “Lingsheng” to carry out earthquake simulations, assessing the affected areas and the intensity of ground shaking at higher resolution to improve the reference value of disaster analysis. Compared with ordinary supercomputers, it can complete more precise simulations over a wider range and reduce computation time to just a few hours. Beyond disaster prevention, “Lingsheng” can also support global weather simulations and largescale molecular screening. The development team said that this system adopts a fullchain inhouse R&D approach and has also carried out domestic alternatives in areas such as chips, memory, networking, and software, aiming to expand the application ecosystem of China’s supercomputing capabilities.
