People Power Party criticizes discussions on constitutional amendment for the incumbent president's re-election

The People Power Party strongly objected on the 28th to National Assembly Speaker Woo Wonshik referring to a constitutional amendment allowing a sitting president to serve consecutive terms as “a matter of the people’s choice.” The party leadership argued that pushing for such an amendment goes against the spirit of the Constitution and criticized it for potentially shaking the entire constitutional revision debate. At a press conference at the National Assembly, party leader Jang Donghyeok cited the Democratic Party’s repeated references to a onepoint constitutional amendment and said that constitutional revision talks would only be possible if President Lee Jaemyung clearly states that he has no intention of serving consecutive terms. Floor leader Jeong Jeomsik also pointed out that under current law, consecutive terms for a sitting president are prohibited, and that making this an issue for constitutional revision would make other revision discussions difficult as well. Chief spokesperson Park Chungkwon characterized the attempt to revise the Constitution for consecutive terms as an effort to prolong the administration, while the Reform Party and the Justice Party also stated that the issue of a sitting president serving consecutive terms should be clearly excluded from constitutional revision discussions.
