We look into the resident backlash over housing supply in Yeomchang Park and why the briefing session was canceled. Quickly check the controversy over Seoul’s only candidate site and the potential future conflicts over the project.

A resident briefing on housing supply for the site of Yeomchang Park in Yeomchangdong, Gangseogu, Seoul, was scheduled to be held on the 11th, but it was canceled before it could even begin due to residents' backlash. In its August 13 real estate measures, the government designated the Yeomchang Park area as a candidate site for new housing supply of about 1,000 households. Residents strongly protested, saying there had been no solicitation of opinions during the site selection, plan announcement, and briefing session preparation process. Yeomchang Park is the only candidate site in Seoul announced in this measure. The briefing that day was attended by Democratic Party lawmaker Han Jeongae and Gangseogu District Mayor Jin Gyohoon, but it could not proceed properly because of residents' protests. After a threehour standoff with residents, Mayor Jin said that if Seoul City promised to create a park, he would withdraw the housing supply plan, but residents continued their opposition, saying responsibility was being shifted to Seoul City. With this briefing falling through, concerns are being raised that conflicts over gathering residents' opinions and 추진ing the project at other candidate sites may intensify. As the government pushes to expand supply by utilizing idle urban land and parks, there are also concerns that local backlash from the outset could affect the project schedule.
