Special counsel seeks 20 to 30 years in prison for former military commanders, including Yeo In-hyung and Lee Jin-woo

The special counsel team investigating the insurrection has sought prison terms of 20 to 30 years for former military commanders who were indicted on charges of deploying troops to the National Assembly and the National Election Commission during the Dec. 3 martial law declaration. At the sentencing hearing held on the 24th at the Seoul Central District Court, the special counsel requested 30 years in prison each for former Defense Counterintelligence Command chief Yeo Inhyeong and former Capital Defense Command chief Lee Jinwoo. It sought 25 years for former Army Chief of Staff Park Ansu, and 20 years each for former Special Warfare Command chief Kwak Jonggeun and former Defense Intelligence Command chief Moon Sangho. Sentencing is scheduled for September 21. The special counsel argued that they were involved in organizing a team to arrest politicians, blocking the National Assembly, and taking control of the National Election Commission in the process of carrying out martial law. The defendants, meanwhile, countered that they had never conspired in advance to impose martial law and had never issued any unlawful orders, appealing for leniency.
