President Lee mentions minimizing conscription and promoting a selective volunteer enlistment system at Yeonpyeongdo

President Lee Jaemyung visited a Marine unit in Yeonpyeongdo, Ongjin County, Incheon, on the 24th and expressed his intention to reduce conscripted troops and introduce a selective volunteer enlistment system. He said that soldiers should be able to choose military service not merely as an obligation, but as a path that helps with career and professional development. At a luncheon meeting with service members, President Lee explained that the nature of military service must change from the past and that he would transform the military system to be centered on specialized soldiers and professional officers who handle advanced equipment. He also emphasized the need to reward sacrifice and expand welfare for soldiers. The visit was held to mark the 76th anniversary of the Korean War and the Month of Patriots and Veterans. President Lee also mentioned the burden of transportation costs for soldiers in West Sea island regions such as Yeonpyeongdo and Baengnyeongdo. He requested that the relevant local governments come up with support measures and said he would consider budget support if necessary. After the visit, President Lee conducted firearms training and an onsite inspection, and he was also reported to have received a briefing on the situation of illegal fishing by Chinese fishing boats near the Northern Limit Line.
