Controversy Grows Over Forced Appointment of Kim Seung-won as Justice Minister Nominee

Controversy over Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won is spreading, with public opposition to forcing through the appointment growing. Check the aftermath of the hearing and even opinion polls to see the political fallout ahead.

As the Blue House and the Democratic Party of Korea are likely to continue the appointment process for Kim Seungwon, the nominee for Minister of Justice, public opposition is growing, led by the opposition party and civic groups. The Democratic Party believes that many of the allegations were largely resolved through the confirmation hearing, but People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy said the nominee is unfit to serve as minister. Democratic Party lawmakers on the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee defended Kim, arguing that he is the right person to lead the justice administration. On the other hand, the People Power Party is opposing the adoption of the hearing report and the push to force through the appointment, and is calling for the nomination to be withdrawn. Even within the party, concerns are being raised that appointing someone against public opinion would carry a heavy burden. In a public opinion poll, 52.1% of respondents said they opposed Kim’s appointment, higher than those in favor. The polling agency analyzed that the low approval rating for state affairs and opposition from moderate voters could become a burden on future government administration. Kim apologized through a media notice after controversy arose over parts of his answers during the confirmation hearing being contrary to the facts.
