Korea’s first memorial space for brain-dead organ donors created at Samsung Medical Center

At Samsung Seoul Hospital, a memorial space has been established for the first time among hospitals in Korea to honor braindead organ donors. The hospital's Organ Transplant Center created this space to remember the dedication of donors and reflect on the meaning of life. In the memorial space, plaques listing the names and donation dates of 529 people who donated organs at this hospital from 1995 to the present have been hung by year, and a mailbox has also been installed so that bereaved families of donors and recipients can exchange letters. About 50 bereaved family members and organ recipients attended the opening ceremony to pay tribute to the deceased. This initiative also aligns with the direction of the government's comprehensive plan for organ and tissue donation and transplantation. The Ministry of Health and Welfare is reviewing measures to expand emotional support for donors and increase memorial spaces such as walls of remembrance at medical institutions and local governments.
