Democratic Party proposes Special Prosecutor Act for the National Election Commission and 3 reform bills

On the 9th, the Democratic Party of Korea proposed a special counsel law for the National Election Commission in relation to the shortage of ballots in the June 3 local elections. This special counsel law was designed so that the special counsel candidates would be selected through a thirdparty recommendation method rather than by the ruling and opposition parties. That day, the Democratic Party also submitted amendments to the National Assembly Act, the National Election Commission Act, and the Public Official Election Candidate Hearing Act through its National Election Commission reform task force. The amendments include converting the chair of the Central Election Commission to a permanent position and increasing the number of standing commissioners from one to three, so that they would separately handle election ballot management, investigation and enforcement, and organizational operations. In addition, the plan includes strengthening audit independence by organizing the Audit Committee primarily with outside figures, and appointing an outside person as secretarygeneral of the Central Election Commission. The Democratic Party said that accountability and transparency in the work of the National Election Commission must be strengthened, and announced that it would also review future constitutional amendments.
