Be careful of hornet stings during grave visits and grave clearing season, with the most patients in September
Why bee sting accidents happen most often in September, and how to prevent them You can reduce the risk by checking for hornet nests and dressing appropriately
Bee sting accidents were found to occur most often in September, when outdoor activities such as hiking, trimming weeds around graves, and ancestral grave visits increase.
According to the Fire Agency's tally, 6,121 patients were transported due to bee stings over the past three years in September, accounting for 29.2% of the total. In fact, in Busan and mountainous areas recently, there have been continued cases of people being stung by hornets during weed trimming and walks and taken to hospital.
The Korea Forest Service's National Arboretum asked people to check in advance, saying hornet nests may be found around graves, in grass, and on mountain slopes. If hornets attack, do not stop running; lower your body and quickly move away at least 10 to 20 meters. It is also recommended to wear lightcolored longsleeved shirts and long pants. Strongly scented perfumes or drinks can also attract bees, so caution is needed.
After being stung by a bee, washing the area with running water and applying a cold compress can help reduce pain and swelling. If allergic reactions such as hives all over the body, difficulty breathing, or dizziness occur, call 119 immediately and receive emergency treatment.
