According to the Taiwan authorities' meteorological department, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred in the waters off Yilan County, Taiwan, at 20:39 on May 1. A China News Service reporter felt noticeable shaking inside a shopping mall in Taipei's Datong District, and the lights at the scene were swaying. The report said the earthquake had a focal depth of about 98.3 kilometers, with the epicenter located in the waters 38.7 kilometers northeast of the Yilan County government. Stronger shaking was felt in Yilan, Hsinchu, Nantou, Hualien and other places, reaching level 4; the meteorological department then issued disaster prevention warnings for Yilan, Taoyuan, Keelung, Taipei, New Taipei and other areas. The China Earthquake Networks Center measured the earthquake on the same day as having a magnitude of about 5.4, with epicenter coordinates at 24.88 degrees north latitude and 122.07 degrees east longitude. Current reports have not mentioned any casualties or major property losses.
