On July 17, 2026, Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, met in Shanghai with UN SecretaryGeneral Guterres, who was in China to attend the World Artificial Intelligence Conference.
Wang Yi said that the Chinese side welcomes Guterres' visit to China and his attendance at the conference, as well as his witnessing of the signing of relevant agreements on the establishment of the World AI Cooperation Organization. He introduced the essence of President Xi Jinping's keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the conference, stressing that China is promoting the development of artificial intelligence in a peoplecentered, beneficial and inclusive, and uplifting and virtuous direction, and hopes to help countries of the Global South build capacity and avoid a new digital divide through the newly established cooperation organization, while also supporting the United Nations in playing a greater role in AI governance.
Wang Yi also said that China appreciates Guterres' adherence to multilateralism during his tenure and his promotion of cooperation between the United Nations and China, and called on all parties to safeguard the authority of the United Nations and advance a more equal and orderly multipolar world and universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization. Guterres, in turn, welcomed the successful holding of the conference and China's promotion of the establishment of the cooperation organization, saying he is willing to continue strengthening communication and cooperation with China and support the relevant mechanism in better serving the global public interest. The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
