Cross-border underground moneylending crackdown operation: Police in Guangdong and Hong Kong join forces to destroy money laundering network More than 170 people arrested and funds involved in the case frozen, cracking down hard on the chain of gambling- and fraud-related fund transfers

The Ministry of Public Security said that in May this year, public security authorities in many parts of the mainland, together with the Hong Kong Police, carried out a unified takedown operation and successfully dismantled a crossborder underground moneylaundering gang entrenched in Guangdong and Hong Kong. More than 170 suspects were arrested, over RMB 15 million in funds involved in the case were frozen, and assets worth about HKD 170 million involved in the case were seized. It is understood that the Hong Kong Police previously discovered abnormal crossborder fund data in some bank accounts and subsequently requested assistance from public security authorities on the mainland. The Economic Crime Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security immediately organized a special task force to launch an investigation and found that the gang had set up shell companies in the mainland and Hong Kong and built illegal fund transfer channels through methods such as matched transactions, fictitious trade, cash and gold smuggling, and virtual currency trading, providing crossborder transfer services for gamblingrelated and fraudrelated criminal activities. In the unified operation in May 2026, mainland police and the Hong Kong Police carried out arrests and seizures simultaneously, completely destroying the criminal network. The Ministry of Public Security said that the two sides will continue to strengthen law enforcement cooperation, crack down on crossborder economic crimes in accordance with the law, and safeguard the financial order and financial security of the GuangdongHong KongMacao Greater Bay Area.
