Wang Yi Meets with United Nations Secretary-General Candidate Espinosa

On June 30, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, met in Beijing with the candidate for the next UN SecretaryGeneral, former President of the UN General Assembly, and former Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Espinosa. During the talks, Espinosa outlined her views on the role of the United Nations and her campaign platform, stressing that the international community currently needs a United Nations that is better able to prevent crises, coordinate cooperation, and act efficiently. She said she supports the oneChina principle and expressed appreciation for China's efforts to uphold multilateralism, support the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and safeguard the common interests of developing countries. Wang Yi said that Espinosa's candidacy reflects the importance attached to multilateralism and the core values of the United Nations. Wang Yi also said that in the face of a complex international situation, the United Nations needs to enhance its vitality and capacity for action, and that China will continue to participate in the relevant election process in a responsible manner and support the UN in raising its authority and role.
