Where does the power of the “Big BRICS” come from, and how great is its impact?
The BRICS cooperation mechanism is once again in the spotlight, releasing stronger influence and consensus amid the rise of the Global South See how the “Big BRICS” expands and upgrades, promoting new opportunities for global governance and shared development
On September 12, the 18th BRICS Leaders' Meeting opened in New Delhi, India. As an important milestone marking the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the BRICS cooperation mechanism, this mechanism has once again become a focal point of international public opinion.
The article argues that the reason the “Greater BRICS” has formed such a strong influence mainly comes from seven aspects: it aligns with the trends of world multipolarization and the rise of the Global South; it has a large membership base; its members have strong resource and industrial complementarity; the cooperation mechanism has been continually improved; the expansion of membership has made it more inclusive; it upholds multilateralism, fairness, and justice in international affairs; and China has continued to play a driving and leading role.
The report also noted that BRICS cooperation has developed from the early “BRIC” framework into the “Greater BRICS” pattern, with the scope of members and partner countries continuing to expand. As China will assume the rotating chairmanship next year, the outside world also expects BRICS cooperation to continue releasing greater impact in areas such as global governance and the common development of the Global South.
