Traffic congestion on the first holiday, just three days after the opening of the Shindo Peace Bridge

The Sindo Peace Bridge, which connects Incheon’s Yeongjongdo and Sindo in Bukdomyeon, Ongjingun, suffered severe traffic congestion as it faced its first holiday weekend just three days after opening. As vehicles poured in all at once, long traffic jams continued in the section leading into Sindo, and police completely restricted access to the bridge from morning until afternoon that day. The Sindo Peace Bridge opened on the 14th, measuring 3.26 km in length with two lanes in both directions. With this bridge in place, vehicle travel from Yeongjongdo to Sindo became much faster than using a ferry, but as tourist demand increased far more than expected, even the internal island roads connecting Sindo, Sido, and Modo were brought to a standstill. At the scene, some visitors waited more than an hour to enter Sindo, and residents said vehicles concentrated on the narrow roads, turning the area into what was effectively a parking lot. Locally, there are also concerns that traffic measures tailored to the surge of visitors in the early days after opening were insufficient.
