Amid controversy over the Samsung Electronics labor union's dispute at the Gwangju semiconductor cluster, President Lee Jae-myung has put the brakes on whether even investment and factory decisions can become subjects of a strike. President Lee Jaemyung said, regarding Samsung Electronics' union declaring that it would make the plan to build the Honam semiconductor cluster promoted in Gwangju an agenda item in labormanagement negotiations, that indiscriminate expansion of disputes is not desirable.
At the State Council meeting on the 21st, President Lee said, “If we do things this way, there will be no end to it,” and added that it is necessary to examine whether it is socially appropriate for individual unions to treat a company's investment decisions or the establishment of a factory itself as if they were subjects of a strike.
Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Younghoon also explained that making Samsung Electronics' decision to build a semiconductor plant in Gwangju a subject of dispute does not align with the purpose of the amendment to the Labor Union Act. The Samsung Electronics branch had previously stated that it would discuss matters related to the Honam semiconductor mega project in the 2027 negotiations.
