Controversy over the Blue House personnel system... Youn Hye-in candidate’s resignation highlights vetting issues
Lee Jae-myung administration’s personnel vetting faces criticism as ministers continue to fall Need to review the Blue House’s recommendation, vetting, and political affairs functions; attention turns to follow-up appointments
As Yoon Hyein, nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family, stepped down 14 days after being nominated, criticism is growing over the Lee Jaemyung administration's personnel vetting and political judgment. This resignation is seen as an extension of the controversy over ministeriallevel appointments that has continued since the current administration took office, leading to calls for a review of the overall personnel system.
Previously, nominees Lee Jinsook for the Ministry of Education, Kang Sunwoo for the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, and Lee Hyehoon for the Ministry of Planning and Budget also withdrew their nominations or resigned voluntarily after their confirmation hearings. Including nominee Yoon, this marks the fourth ministerial nominee to fall through, drawing criticism that the Blue House's recommendation, vetting, and nomination process did not function properly.
The government handles ministeriallevel appointments centered on the Blue House Personnel Committee, while the senior secretaries for personnel, civil affairs, and political affairs each take charge of recommendation, vetting, and political functions. However, in this case, it is being assessed that this division of roles did not operate smoothly. Starting this week, National Assembly confirmation hearings will continue, and appointments for major vacant posts such as the Blue House Policy Chief are also scheduled, so personnel controversies are expected to continue for the time being.
