HL Mando Pyeongtaek Plant Entanglement Accident, There Was the Same Type of Accident 10 Years Ago

It has been confirmed that there was a similar type of accident 10 years ago at the HL Mando Pyeongtaek plant, where a subcontracted worker in his 20s died after being caught in machinery while working. Labor groups say that aging equipment and inadequate safety devices have been pointed out for a long time, but have not been improved. The Korean Metal Workers' Union held a press conference on the 29th in the conference room of the Metal Workers' Union in Junggu, Seoul, and released the results of its investigation into the accident. It was found that the deceased, Kim Seungmo, 28, was involved in an accident on the 22nd while performing maintenance work inside metal processing equipment when the equipment suddenly started operating. At the time, two maintenance subcontractors were working simultaneously at the site, but there was reportedly no safety manager to oversee and supervise them. The union explained that the accident equipment was an older model produced in 2005 and did not have a safety device that automatically stops when the door is opened. Workers had been calling for the equipment to be replaced since 10 years ago, but their demands were not accepted, and it is known that a similar accident occurred with the same model in 2016. The bereaved family and the union are calling for a full investigation into the truth and the establishment of measures to prevent recurrence.
