The Investigative Office's staffing set at 2,874… Prosecutors' ranks differentiated by experience

The government has set the staffing level of the Major Crimes Investigation Agency, which is set to launch this October, at 2,874 and announced the organizational structure of its headquarters and the Seoul and five provincial offices. The headquarters will be responsible for investigation policy and command and supervision, while the provincial offices will directly investigate major crimes in their jurisdictions. The crimes under investigation are the seven major crimes: corruption, economic crimes, defense procurement, narcotics, state protection, cybercrime, and crimes of legal distortion. The Seoul Office will be staffed with divisions for economics and finance, antitrust, anticorruption, narcotics, and advanced investigation, and a dedicated supplementary investigation unit was also newly established to handle cases that had been initially investigated by other agencies such as the police. Prosecutors transferring from the prosecution service to the Major Crimes Investigation Agency will be assigned investigator ranks based on their legal experience. Those with 10 or more years of experience will be appointed at Grade 3, and those with less than 10 years at Grade 4. The government said it will maintain their existing salary and retirement age, and apply whichever compensation is more favorable by comparing before and after the transition.
