The Army is pushing a plan to raise the average monthly salary of sergeants to around 3 million won starting next year in order to address the shortage of noncommissioned officer personnel. It also plans to raise the civil service treatment grades for first sergeants and sergeant majors by one level each.
On the 19th, the Army held a press briefing at the Ministry of National Defense and explained the 'NCO Comprehensive Development 4.0' policy. The policy also includes shortening the time it takes to get promoted and easing the requirements for NCOs to convert to longterm service.
In addition, to allow NCOs to focus more on operational duties, the Army has decided to expand private outsourcing for unit management tasks such as weeding and trash sorting. The Army's policy is also to broaden opportunities for NCOs, such as exchanges with foreign militaries and language education, and assign them key roles in operating advanced combat power.
