Coupang Inc. posted its best quarterly performance on record, with secondquarter revenue this year exceeding 13.3 trillion won, but its operating loss also reached 835 billion won, significantly widening its deficit. Cumulative operating losses for the first half topped 1 trillion won. The biggest factor behind the deterioration in earnings was the fine related to the personal information leak incident that occurred last year. The 620 billion won fine imposed by the Personal Information Protection Commission was reflected in secondquarter losses, and the issuance of largescale compensation discount coupons also added to the burden. Revenue and customer numbers in the business itself showed signs of recovery. Revenue from Product Commerce, its core business, grew, and the number of active customers also increased to 24.7 million. Coupang explained that customers are returning to preincident levels. However, losses from the fire at the Incheon logistics center and the National Tax Service's additional tax assessment issue are expected to continue affecting performance going forward. Coupang is reviewing administrative and legal procedures in response to the related measures.
