Hyundai Motor and Kia sold a combined 506,200 vehicles in the U.S. market in the third quarter of this year, up 5.4% from the same period last year. Hyundai Motor Group said this performance has increased the likelihood that it will surpass Ford and rank third in U.S. sales on a quarterly basis. Hyundai sold 269,541 vehicles, including Genesis sales, while Kia recorded 236,659. Sales rose for both companies in September as well, with Hyundai selling 85,502 vehicles and Kia selling 77,009. However, Ford's thirdquarter results have not yet been released. Leading the sales growth was hybrid vehicles. Hyundai and Kia's U.S. hybrid vehicle sales in the third quarter totaled 138,112, up 53.4% from a year earlier and setting a new quarterly record. In contrast, electric vehicle sales fell 51% to 22,311, which is interpreted as reflecting the impact of the end of the U.S. EV tax credit last year.
