On the morning of July 23 local time, the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians opened in Philadelphia, USA, and the winners of this year's Fields Medals were announced. Chinese young mathematicians Wang Hong and Deng Yu won the award.
Wang Hong was born in 1991, and Deng Yu was born in 1989. Both earned their bachelor's degrees from Peking University. This is the first time Chinese mathematicians have won the Fields Medal, and also the first time Chinese mathematicians have won two Fields Medals at the same International Congress of Mathematicians, marking significant progress in Chinese mathematics.
The Fields Medal was established by the International Mathematical Union and is awarded every four years to young mathematicians under the age of 40. It is regarded as an important international award in the field of mathematics.
