It has been revealed that blank ammunition and live rounds kept by the police have recently been lost or removed without authorization one after another. At Naju Police Station, a box containing 50 blank rounds went missing last July, and cases of live rounds and blank rounds leaking out were also confirmed at Jeongeup Police Station and the Jeju Airport Police Unit.
According to materials submitted to the National Assembly, from 2017 to 2026, there were a total of 10 cases of police ammunition loss or unauthorized removal, amounting to 68 rounds. Of these, 4 cases occurred this year alone, and only 5 rounds were recovered.
In response to the successive incidents, the Korean National Police Agency said it has instructed special inspections at provincial and metropolitan police agencies nationwide and will review the overall procedures for receiving and recovering ammunition to reorganize its management system.
