Investigation begins into the controversy over the purchase of Ahn Jung-geun's calligraphic works and the appropriateness of Gyeonggi Province's budget execution Key issues include the circumstances behind the use of 2.4 billion won in private subsidies and verification of the price
Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Miae has instructed an investigation into the appropriateness of the purchase process for Admiral Ahn Junggeun's calligraphy that took place during former Governor Kim Dongyeon's tenure.
According to Gyeonggi Province, Governor Choo on the 15th ordered the relevant departments to inspect the overall purchase process of Admiral Ahn's calligraphy piece 'Jangtanilseong Seonjoilbon' and the budget execution procedures, and to also check whether public institution funds were used appropriately and report back.
The calligraphy piece is known to have been brought into the country in August last year after Gyeonggi Province provided 2.4 billion won in private capital subsidy to the Gwangbokhoe Gyeonggi Provincial Branch, which then delivered it to a Japanese private owner. Meanwhile, in the Gyeonggi Provincial Council, the fact that the 1.3 billion won budget for purchasing independencerelated calligraphy was not executed, as well as the appropriateness of the purchase method and price of this calligraphy piece, were raised as issues.
On the same day, former Governor Kim, in relation to Gyeonggi Province's financial situation, refuted claims of a fiscal crisis under the current provincial administration and stated that expansionary fiscal policy was a responsible choice. In response, Governor Choo's side said that expansionary fiscal policy without efforts to help itself cannot be seen as a responsible provincial administration.
