Strengthen Basic Research and Advance the Building of a Science and Technology Powerhouse

On April 30, General Secretary Xi Jinping attended a symposium on strengthening basic research in Shanghai and delivered an important speech, setting out arrangements around enhancing original innovation capability and laying a solid foundation for becoming a worldleading science and technology power. The article points out that basic research is at the starting point of the research chain and is related to the source capability of scientific and technological innovation. Facing a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, China needs to further optimize the layout of basic research, strengthen overall planning and toplevel design, and promote the better transformation and application of scientific research results. The article also mentions that education, science and technology, and talent development should be advanced in an integrated manner, the talent pool for basic research should be expanded, and support and guarantees such as funding, major scientific and technological infrastructure, categorized evaluation, and research integrity should be strengthened in order to continuously raise the level of basic research.
