Korea's greenhouse gas emissions decreased, and sluggishness in the steel and cement industries reduced the emissions trend Check the causes by sector and changes in net emissions, and look at the reduction challenges

South Korea's total greenhouse gas emissions last year were tentatively estimated to have decreased by 0.9% from the previous year. The slowdown in production in emissionintensive industries such as steel, petrochemicals, and cement had a major impact. According to the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, total emissions amounted to 685.71 million tons, decreasing in the industry, transport, agriculture, livestock and fisheries, and waste sectors, but increasing in the power and building sectors. In particular, the industrial sector fell by 2.1% as steel production and cement shipments declined due to a slowdown in the construction market and sluggish exports. Emissions in the transport sector also fell by 2.9% as diesel vehicles decreased and electric and hydrogen vehicles increased. By contrast, the power sector rose slightly due to scheduled nuclear power plant inspections and increased coalfired power generation, while the building sector increased by 3.3% due to higher winter heating demand. Net emissions, which reflect the amount absorbed by forests and land, instead increased by 0.5% as carbon absorption decreased due to the wildfires in North Gyeongsang Province. The government explained that additional reductions are needed to achieve the 2030 reduction target.
