Review of the Prosecutor’s Office organization revision…ruling party and government discuss renaming and abolishing the planning director position
Reconsideration of the Prosecutor’s Office organization proposal, review of renaming the judicial oversight division and restructuring the organization Key points to examine: reducing confusion before launch and even the controversy over the prosecutor staffing quota
The Democratic Party of Korea, the government, and the presidential office have decided to revisit the organizational plan for the Prosecution Office, which is scheduled to launch on October 2. The ruling party and government are reviewing a plan to change the name of the 'Judicial Control Division' to the 'NonTransfer Case Review Division' and to abolish the posts of Chief of Criminal Planning and Chief of Major Crime Planning.
This move came after President Lee Jaemyung instructed a review of the Prosecution Office organizational plan following his visit to France. Within the ruling camp, criticism continued that the name could give the impression that it preserves the prosecution's influence, and the issue of maintaining the prosecutor quota also became controversial.
However, no conclusion was reached at this meeting on a plan to reduce the total number of prosecutors. It was pointed out that the quota is set by law, so legislative action by the National Assembly would be needed to reduce it. The ruling party and government decided to speed up the work of organizing the office structure, budget, subordinate laws, and case transfers needed for the launch of the Prosecution Office, and plan to gather opinions from various sectors during the relevant procedures.
