At the U.S. Osan Air Base (K55) in Seotanmyeon, Pyeongtaeksi, Gyeonggi Province, an accident involving the leakage of white phosphorus occurred on the afternoon of the 28th. Fire and police responded after receiving a report of a suspected chemical leak, secured the scene, and carried out safety measures.
The accident reportedly began when material leaked from two white phosphorus shell warheads, and the exact amount leaked has not been confirmed. White phosphorus is classified as a hazardous substance because it is highly reactive in the air and can cause skin burns or inhalation damage.
Pyeongtaek City sent an emergency disaster alert advising nearby residents to evacuate, but the U.S. military explained that the leaked white phosphorus had already been diluted by about 80% in advance, informing them that the danger was low. Afterward, the measures inside the base were completed, and another disaster alert was sent telling nearby residents to return to their daily lives. No casualties have been reported so far.
