First-Instance Verdict in Zhou Derui Bribery Case: Sentenced to 14 Years and Fined 4 Million Yuan

On July 13, 2026, the Intermediate People's Court of Datong City, Shanxi Province, handed down a firstinstance verdict in the bribery case of Zhou Derui, former member of the Standing Committee of the Tianjin Municipal Committee and former head of the Organization Department. The court found him guilty of bribery, sentenced him to 14 years in prison, and imposed a fine of 4 million yuan; the assets and proceeds from his bribery will be recovered in accordance with the law and turned over to the state treasury. The court found through trial that from 2000 to 2025, Zhou Derui took advantage of his position and the convenience formed by his authority and status to provide assistance to others in business operations, project contracting, and job adjustments, illegally accepting property worth more than 43.19 million yuan in total. The court stated that, considering that after Zhou Derui was brought into custody he truthfully confessed and voluntarily disclosed most of the facts that the investigating authorities had not yet uncovered, and that he pleaded guilty, expressed remorse, and actively returned the illicit gains, with the relevant property already fully recovered, he was given a lighter punishment in accordance with the law. The case had previously been heard in open court on April 17, 2026.
