President Lee has not taken a position on the controversy over amending the constitution for a second term

President Lee Jaemyung did not make a public statement on the 4th regarding the controversy over a sitting president's bid for reelection through a constitutional amendment. The presidential office says there is a prevailing view that no further explanation is necessary, as it has already stated several times that it is impossible. The controversy grew after comments by National Assembly Speaker Cho Jungsik. Earlier, Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoonsik said the president had stated that a constitutional amendment, including reelection, is not permitted under the constitutional system and is also practically difficult. The president also made no related remarks at the Cabinet meeting he chaired for the first time after returning from his trip to the U.S. and South America. Inside and outside the ruling party, there are concerns that a prolonged silence could weigh on state affairs, along with calls for the president to address the issue personally.
