U.S. memory semiconductor company Micron Technology has begun expanding its highbandwidth memory (HBM) production facilities at its Hiroshima plant in Japan. According to Bloomberg, the new factory will produce nextgeneration memory semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI) computing.
The total investment amounts to 1.5 trillion yen, or about 14 trillion won. The Japanese government has decided to support up to 500 billion yen of that amount, and Micron plans to supply the HBM produced at the new facility to Nvidia and others.
Micron is aiming to ship products in the summer of 2028. This expansion is part of a strategy to increase production in response to growing AI demand and supply constraints in memory chips, and the company is also pursuing new factories in Idaho and New York in the United States.
