Chey Tae-won hints at a comprehensive review of SK’s semiconductor fab expansion plan

SK Group Chairman Chey Taewon said he is leaving open the possibility of building additional factories in response to rising semiconductor demand. Speaking to reporters after attending the Nikkei Forum held in Tokyo, Japan, on the 10th, he said the company is reviewing various options for the next factory location, including both domestic and overseas sites. Chairman Chey said that demand continues to grow even after the completion of the fourth phase of the Yongin semiconductor cluster, implying that adding another factory may be inevitable. He also said he would not rule out the possibility of expanding overseas, suggesting that future investment directions may not be limited to South Korea. He explained that infrastructure conditions such as power, land, labor, and water are important in selecting a factory site. However, he said the company is currently focusing first on building the Yongin cluster, and that the next location will be decided based on a comprehensive assessment.
