The police have handed over People Power Party lawmaker Cho Eunhee and a man known as political broker Myeong Taekyun to prosecutors in connection with allegations of interference in candidate nominations that surfaced during the process of the byelection for the 21st National Assembly members.
The police said that Rep. Cho is suspected of providing the safenumber phone numbers of about 2,200 party delegates in Seocho District to Mr. Myeong during the People Power Party primary for the Seochogap district in Seoul in February 2022, allowing him to conduct a public opinion poll. She was also charged with receiving political funds worth 2 million won by obtaining the results of the opinion poll free of charge from Mr. Myeong.
Mr. Myeong is accused of leaking personal information by delivering part of the response results to Rep. Cho after conducting the opinion poll. The police determined that data processed from the opinion poll results also constitutes a leak of personal information.
This case was transferred to the police special investigation unit after the special prosecutor team investigating allegations related to First Lady Kim Keonhee conducted witness interviews, and the police decided to send Rep. Cho and Mr. Myeong to prosecutors without detention after questioning them in sequence.
