Wang Yi Meets UN Secretary-General Guterres in Shanghai

On July 17, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Foreign Minister, met in Shanghai with UN SecretaryGeneral Guterres, who was in China to attend the World Artificial Intelligence Conference and witness the signing ceremony of the Convention of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization. Wang Yi said that the Chinese side's push to establish the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization aims to promote the development of AI in a direction that is peoplecentered, beneficial and inclusive for all, and good and upward, while also helping countries of the Global South strengthen capacity building and supporting the United Nations in playing its main channel role in AI governance. Wang Yi also stressed that, in the face of a complex and turbulent international situation, the importance of the United Nations should not be weakened but strengthened. The Chinese side is willing to continue deepening cooperation with the United Nations and advance multilateralism and a more just and reasonable global governance system. Guterres said that the United Nations is willing to maintain close communication with the Chinese side, support relevant cooperation mechanisms in playing their role, and continue strengthening coordination in areas such as peace, development, and human rights. The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual interest.
