The Democratic Party of Korea won 12 of the 16 provinciallevel local government heads in the local elections held one year after the launch of the Lee Jaemyung administration. In the byelections for National Assembly members, the Democratic Party won in 9 of 14 districts, the People Power Party in 4, and an independent candidate in 1.
The Democratic Party won in Gyeonggi, Incheon, Busan, Ulsan, South Chungcheong, North Chungcheong, Daejeon, Sejong, Gwangju, North Jeolla, Gangwon, and Jeju. Gyeonggi Province governorelect Choo Miae became the first female provinciallevel head, and former lawmaker Park Chandae was elected mayor of Incheon. Former lawmakers Jeon Jaesoo and Kim Sangwook were elected mayors of Busan and Ulsan, respectively, and former Blue House senior presidential secretary for political affairs Woo Sangho was elected governor of Gangwon.
However, in the Seoul mayoral election, Democratic Party candidate Jeong Wono was defeated by People Power Party candidate Oh Sehoon by about 1 percentage point. In the superintendent of education elections, progressive candidates won in 10 areas, while conservative candidates won in 6.
