New York City high-rise remains unstable after columns buckle

A 37storey highrise under conversion in Midtown Manhattan remained unstable on Tuesday after columns buckled and bricks fell into the street during the morning rush hour, prompting evacuations nearby. City officials said a school with about 400 children was evacuated along with other buildings in the area. No injuries were reported, and workers inside the tower were accounted for. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said engineers were assessing how to stabilize the former Pfizer headquarters, which is being redeveloped into luxury apartments.
