Quebec hospitals are dealing with unusually high emergency room crowding this July, with some facilities operating at more than 200% capacity. In Montreal, the Jewish General Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital were both heavily over capacity, while other hospitals in the province also reported elevated occupancy.
Doctors said several factors are contributing to the pressure, including the recent heat wave, more trauma cases from outdoor activities, and longer waits for the 811 health information line. Staff shortages and beds closed because of vacations are also limiting available space in some hospitals.
Emergency physicians say the situation is straining care across the system, especially as many patients remain in hospital while waiting for longterm care placement. Santé Québec said emergency departments are seeing high demand and urged people to call 811 when appropriate before going to the ER.
