Nanaimo city council is set to review options for reducing construction noise, with a focus on evenings and weekends. Coun. Paul Manly says the proposal responds to complaints from residents who say construction activity has been disruptive for years.
Under the current bylaw, construction is allowed from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays and statutory holidays. Work involving blasting, drills and compressors has stricter limits and is not allowed on Sundays and holidays.
Builders and housing industry groups argue that weekend and afterhours work can help projects move faster, especially amid strong demand for housing. They also warn that tighter rules could slow development and add complexity to permit scheduling, while city staff may also consider exceptions for special cases.
